Welcome to Lake Tyrrell, where the night sky reflects across a vast pink salt lake and creates one of the most breathtaking astrophotography experiences in Australia.
This workshop will be all about capturing the rare beauty of the double Milky Way core winter arch, with a strong focus on creating stunning panoramas. You’ll also learn how to refine compositions for this unique arch, and dive into advanced techniques like tracking and stacking images to reduce noise for cleaner, sharper results.
Over four nights, we’ll balance hands-on shooting under some of Victoria’s darkest skies with dedicated editing sessions designed to build both your technical skills and creative eye.
But Lake Tyrrell is more than just a location, it’s a sacred landscape, deeply significant to Indigenous Australians who have used the stars for navigation, storytelling, and spiritual connection for thousands of years. As we frame the Milky Way above, we’ll also pause to honor the ancient star lore that has been passed down through generations.
I’m Jason, your guide and host for this journey. I’ll provide you with the essential tools, knowledge, and guidance to capture remarkable nightscape images, while also encouraging creativity and reflection under the stars.
This is a small-group workshop designed for both adventure and growth. Spots are limited, don’t miss your chance to join me at Lake Tyrrell for four unforgettable nights of creativity, connection, and wonder.

How to get there.
We will be staying at two of the best AirBnBs in the heart of Sea Lake, Victoria, Australia. Addresses will be provided upon booking. If you’re leaving from Melbourne, the drive up is around 4 hours from the CBD. Otherwise, the closest airport is Mildura Airport, which is around a 2.5 hours drive from Sea Lake, Victoria. The latter option can get pricey so it’s often cheaper to fly into Melbourne and hire a car. Check both if you are flying in as you can find deals.
Itinerary.
In my experience of running workshops, it does not work to have a fixed schedule. Weather conditions can be unpredictable so I like to have a plan but have it flexible depending on the outdoor conditions. Below I’ve outlined what would be covered in the workshop.
-
Arrival, orientation, experience the Sea Lake Silo Art light projection show, then first night shoot, practice panoramas and stacking.
-
Daytime scouting, drone and sunset if time allows, practice panos, night photography shoot, first double arch attempt.
-
Editing workshop, Milky Way double arch attempt No. 2.
-
Editing workshop daytime scouting, final sunset and drone session, new location double arch attempt No. 3.
This night is reserved for a secret spot to capture the Milky Way over a very unique foreground.
