Welcome to a unique 4-night astrophotography experience set on one of Tasmania’s most photogenic and remote islands. Bruny Island offers pristine landscapes, abundant wildlife, and some of the darkest skies in the Southern Hemisphere. During this workshop, you’ll develop your skills in nightscape photography, image stacking for noise reduction, star tracker use, and time-lapse photography.
Explore a range of incredible locations, from coastal cliffs and lighthouses to remote beaches and aurora-viewing lookouts.
Each day includes hands-on instruction, advanced post-processing sessions, and real-world shooting practice. We’ll also provide star trackers for guided use in the field, giving you a chance to experiment with tracked wide-field Milky Way images.
This workshop is designed for photographers who want to grow their skills in:
Nightscape photography
Image stacking to reduce noise
Using star trackers (equipment provided for participants)
Time-lapse and star trail photography
Advanced post-processing techniques
We'll combine hands-on instruction in the field with in-depth editing sessions, and all post-processing lessons will be recorded so you can revisit them after the trip. The itinerary is kept flexible to adapt to weather, lighting, and group interests, ensuring we make the most of every opportunity under the stars or otherwise.

Itinerary + Travel Information

To ensure a smooth and stress-free arrival for the Bruny Island Astrophotography Workshop, please review the travel details below:
📍 Group Pickup Location: Hobart International Airport (HBA)
🕐 Pickup Time: 1:00 PM on Day 1 of the workshopWe’ll meet at the designated group pickup area outside the Arrivals terminal and travel together to the Bruny Island ferry terminal in Kettering (about 40 minutes by road). From there, we’ll cross to Bruny Island and check in at our accommodation before the evening shoot.

If you’re traveling from overseas (e.g., the U.S., Europe, or Asia):
Book your international flight to arrive in Sydney (SYD) or Melbourne (MEL).
From there, connect to a domestic flight to Hobart, arriving by 12:30 PM on Day 1.
Allow at least 2 hours between your international arrival and domestic departure to clear customs and immigration.
Most flights from the U.S. arrive in Sydney or Melbourne early morning, giving you plenty of time for a same-day connection to Hobart.

Please schedule your domestic flight to arrive at Hobart Airport by 12:30 PM on Day 1. This ensures enough time for baggage claim before the group transfer.

Ferry Crossing to Bruny Island: Approx. 20 minutes

Workshop Begins: With a sunset and night shoot close to the accomodation (weather dependent)

Arrival & Orientation
Pick-up at Hobart Airport (by 4:00 PM)
Ferry to Bruny Island and check-in to seaside cabins
Group welcome, gear setup, and intro to astrophotography basics
Easy local shoot in Adventure Bay to get warmed up

Each day will be a mix of:
Scenic locations like Cape Bruny Lighthouse, West Cloudy Bay, Fluted Cape, and the Cape Queen Elizabeth Track, and the Neck Reserve which includes Truganini Lookout
Evening and night shoots focused on Milky Way, aurora (if visible), and possible bioluminescence
Hands-on stacking and star tracker sessions to help reduce noise and capture more detail in the night sky
Time-lapse photography guidance for capturing movement and change over time, to include star trails.
Post-processing tutorials in Lightroom, Photoshop, and other tools—covering everything from blending to color grading
Mornings are kept light to allow for rest, wildlife photography, or short hikes. Afternoons include editing sessions and prep for each evening’s shoot. The exact order and timing will shift based on conditions and the best light.
